Frontera — Selective-Access Carry-On
A carry-on luggage system that enables intentional access without exposing the entire interior.
Most suitcases still rely on full-panel openings, making it difficult to retrieve essentials without exposing the entire interior, especially in tight airport spaces.

FRONTERA is a carry-on suitcase designed to reduce friction in everyday travel moments for frequent travelers.

Redefining the Ritual of Opening
Compared to traditional 'push-and-pinch' TSA locks, the Frontera Dual Lock introduces a turn-dial mechanism. This shift prioritizes natural hand movements, making the unlocking process more intuitive, efficient, and physically effortless.

The dual-dial locking system allows the main compartment and the front-access lid to be operated independently for selective access.

These sketches capture the process behind Frontera by exploring travel pain points, access ideas, and mechanisms that slowly shaped the final design.

Structural Details

Early-stage exploration of hinge and opening mechanisms to
evaluate opening angles, constraints, and user interaction states.
Version 1 – Initial Prototype
-
Short, straight fixing plate with no curved section
-
Poor fit with the curved front lid
-
Difficult to secure, prone to lifting
Version 2 – Improved Movable Design
-
Added a curved, movable connecting part
-
Better matched the lid curvature
-
More stable, reliable, and easier to use
Version 3 – Fully Fixed Concept
-
Non-movable hinge to simplify structure
-
Lid stuck after unlocking the TSA dial
-
Failed to release naturally

Through paper mockups, I evaluated scale, curvature details, and the practical width of the front lid.

The physical pieces behind Frontera—materials, prototypes, and working mockups that turned early concepts into the final product.

The logo uses a softened F form to reflect Frontera’s calm, functional character. Integrated into the wheels, it becomes a subtle brand detail revealed through movement rather than surface graphics.

Front-access design allows easy laptop retrieval on the go.

Frontera explores two contrasting material identities.
The silver-pink model is finished in woven nylon fabric, emphasizing lightness, tactility, and everyday friendliness. The black model adopts a leather exterior, highlighting sophistication, durability, and a more formal character. These options reflect how material and color choices shape the emotional tone of the same product.
